I Hate Swords +1

As the title states, I hate the phrases “sword +1”, “shield +2”, “plate armor +2”, etc. They pull me right out of the fiction. You shouldn’t give anything in your game world a name that doesn’t make sense for the characters to say. So, I stole an idea from George R. R. Martin, and made magic swords in the Crusader Kingdoms into swords made with special metals that can only be worked with magic. I also like the idea of a split between common and unique magic items, as implied by the ACKS Magical Engineering proficiency.

So, I created my own tables for magic swords, armor, and miscellaneous weapons. Here are the results. Note that several of the unique swords are stolen from Simon at The Sky Full of Dust.

Items not marked as unique are common. Descriptions of the common items follow.

Dragonbone: Iron (including iron alloys such as steel) is notoriously antimagical, so magicians must use other materials to craft enchanted weapons. The most common replacement is dragonbone. A dragons bones, as is widely known, are made of metal. Dragonbones is somewhat lighter than steel, and stronger as well, and does not disrupt magic the way iron does. Dragonbone can only be melted and shaped magically, so dragonbone armor and weapons are always enchanted. Dragonbone is naturally the color and luster of well polished steel. A dragon’s scales (technically osteoderms) are made of a pigmented version of the same material, and are often smelted into the ‘bone to tint the metal. A dragonbone weapon grants a +1 bonus on attack throws and damage rolls and strikes as a magic weapon. Dragonbone armor and shields increase the AC the item provides by 1 and reduce its encumbrance by 1 stone. A dragonbone helm has its encumbrance reduced by 1 stone and grants a +1 bonus on d20 rolls on the Mortal Wounds chart, for a total of a +3 bonus for a dragonbone heavy helm.

Enchanted: Weapons and armor that are made entirely of wood, leather, and other materials other than iron, can be enchanted normally. An enchanted weapon grants a +1 bonus on attack throws and damage rolls and strikes as a magic weapon. Enchanted leather armor provides AC 2 and has encumbrance 0. Enchanted scale armor provides AC 3 and has encumbrance 1.

Truesilver Weapon: Truesilver is also used in place of iron to craft magical weapons. Truesilver is simply pure silver that has been magically hardened to have strength and resilience similar to fine steel. It is “true” as in “faithful or reliable” rather than “true” as in “not a lie”. Truesilver weapons strike as magic weapons and they grant a +2 bonus to hit and damage against creatures that are vulnerable to silver, and a +1 bonus to hit and damage against everything else.

Beastman Bane Weapon: +3 hit and damage vs. beastmen. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Spellbane Dragonbone Weapon: +3 hit and damage vs. spell casters and creatures with spell-like abilities. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Summoner’s Bane Weapon: +3 hit and damage vs. summoned creatures. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Giantsbane Weapon: +3 hit and damage vs. giant humanoids. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Dragonsbane Weapon: +3 hit and damage vs. dragons. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Flaming Dragonbone Sword: When drawn, the blade of this weapon is shrouded in flames that provide light, and set things on fire, just like a torch. All damage dealt by the weapon is fire damage. +3 hit and damage vs. regenerating creatures. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Glowing Truesilver Weapon: Provides light in 30′ radius, as per a light spell. +2 hit and damage vs. creatures vulnerable to silver. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Demonsbane Truesilver Weapon: +3 hit and damage vs. Chthonic spirits. +2 hit and damage vs. other creatures vulnerable to silver. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Werebane Truesilver Weapon: +3 hit and damage vs. lycanthropes. +2 hit and damage vs. other creatures vulnerable to silver. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else, Magic.

Corpsebane Truesilver Weapon: +3 hit and damage vs. undead. +2 hit and damage vs. other creatures vulnerable to silver. +1 hit and damage vs. everything else. Magic.

Energy Bow: Shoots arrows composed of electricity. +1 hit and damage. All damage is electrical damage. Attacks consume no ammunition.

Arrow of Slaying: +3 hit and damage. Keyed to a specific type of creature; if it hits a creature of that type, the creature dies instantly, with no save allowed. Creature type (d20): 1 Elementals; 2 Constructs; 3 Undead; 4 Plant Monsters; 5 Bugs (non-sentient); 6 Sea Creatures (non-sentient); 7 Reptiles (non-sentient, includes dinosaurs); 8 Birds (non-sentient); 9 Mammals (non-sentient); 10 Dragons; 11 Giants (including Telkaynie); 12 Beastman; 13 Atlantean; 14 Warrior (human with Fighting 2+); 15 Thief (human with Tievery 1+); 16 Clergy (human with Divine 1+); 17 Wizard (human with Arcane 1+); 18 Chthonic Spirits; 19 Wyld Spirits; 20 Celestial Spirits.

Delver’s Helm: Dragonbone (+1 bonus on d20 rolls on Mortal Wounds table). Grants wearer 60′ infravision.

Helm of Tongues: Dragonbone (+1 bonus on d20 rolls on Mortal Wounds table). Wearer can understand the spoken words of any creature, read words written in any language, and cast Tongues 1/day as a spell-like ability with a casting time of 1 turn.

Helm of Telepathy: Dragonbone (+1 bonus on d20 rolls on Mortal Wounds table). Wearer can read the surface thoughts of any creature within 90′ at will, and can send a telepathic message to anyone who’s surface thoughts he is reading. Using this item requires total concentration; wearer cannot move or take any other action while it is in use.

Helm of Law: Dragonbone (+1 bonus on d20 rolls on Mortal Wounds table). If worn by a Lawful character, any Lawful troops, followers, or henchmen commanded by the wearer gain a +1 bonus to Morale. If worn by a Neutral or Chaotic character, they must make a WIS save or their alignment changes to Lawful until they remove the helmet, and they cannot remove the helmet until they receive a Remove Curse effect. A victim of the helm of law likes his new alignment and does not want to remove the helmet. Once affected, the victim gains the benefits the helmet grants any Lawful wearer.

Helm of Chaos: Dragonbone (+1 bonus on d20 rolls on Mortal Wounds table). If worn by a Chaotic character, any Chaotic troops, followers, or henchmen commanded by the wearer gain a +1 bonus to Morale. If worn by a Neutral or Lawful character, they must make a WIS save or their alignment changes to Lawful until they remove the helmet, and they cannot remove the helmet until they receive a Remove Curse effect. A victim of the helm of chaos likes his new alignment and does not want to remove the helmet. Once affected, the victim gains the benefits the helmet grants any Chaotic wearer.

Cursed Sword: d6: 1-4 Dragonbone, 5-6 Truesilver. -2 hit and damage. Wielder must make WIS save or believe it is a +2 weapon. Cannot discard sword until you receive remove curse or dispel evil. While you carry it, you must use the weapon whenever you engage in melee combat.

Cursed Armor or Shield: Cursed armor and shields provide no armor bonus (that is, a character with cursed plate armor and a normal helm and shield has AC 2). Wearer must make a WIS save or believe it is +2 armor or shield. Cannot remove cursed armor or discard cursed shield until you receive remove curse or dispel evil. While you carry a cursed shield, you must wield it whenever you engage in melee combat.
